It’s been a minute thanks to a flu and an unusually busy fortnight — but I’ve returned with Heliotropic number #15.
Reading - Phosphorescence by Julia Baird. I picked it up at the op-shop for $4. It’s been a nice easy read with lots of little reminders centred around the idea of awe. A nice one when you’re in a transitory/reflective moment.

A quote I liked from the above book
People from a planet without flowers would think we must be mad with joy the whole time to have such things about us. — Iris Murdoch, A Fairly Honourable Defeat
Watch - speaking of feeling reflective, someone sent this YouTube channel Reflections of Life to me recently and it’s really special. It’s a film duo that interview people from all over the world ‘Humans of New York’ style, who are all extraordinary in their own ways. Lots of wisdom from elders in particular and it really restores ones faith in humanity, let me tell you! Great if you want to lend a new perspective. I particularly loved this one and this one and this one.
Healing recipe - this vegan Gambian Peanut Stew by Rainbow Plant Life. So good when you’re sick.
Hummus bowl - this is probably one of the best things I’ve ever made inspired by something someone once brought to a birthday. Basically, it’s a hummus bowl with roast cauliflower on top, BUT the best part is this toasted butter/seed/currant/spice situation on top.
For hummus - blend chickpeas, lemon, tahini, dash of cumin, salt, garlic, ice water until smooth
For cauliflower - roast in cumin/coriander/paprika
Seed mix - toast sunflower, sesame seeds, currants, coriander powder, sumac, cumin in a pan — then add butter, parsley, grated in some lemon rind and garlic.
Optional but necessary - add flat bread into the leftover butter in the pan w/ more parsley… so good I promise. Then just assemble.
Jean patch - I can’t believe it, but right after posting about wanting to crochet a jean patch… a hole formed in the back of my shorts! I immediately crochet this doily to sew on the back. It’s not as cute as the reference pic on the knee but I’m pretty happy with the outcome and excited for the next time this happens.
